Much of Luke's term focuses on preparation for the Foal sales. His class has just six weeks to train the foals for sale. Luke is hoping he will be one of the students picked to walk the foals in the sales ring at Tattersalls, County Meath. 20 year old Jack Graham from Ballymoney is in his second year at Loughry studying Food Technology, Manufacturing and Sciences. Much of his time this term is taken up with The Chicken Challenge. His class have been given 12 weeks to develop a new chicken product that is nutritious, allergen free, convenient and in sustainable packaging. Jack's team have to make something tasty out of waste product chicken liver. Award winning local chef Will Brown is on hand to provide feedback before Jack's big pitch to Moy Park, one of Europe's largest chicken producers. The Greenmount glasshouses are filling up with poinsettias that the Horticulture students are growing for Christmas. The Dairy Centre is busy as always with the 180 dairy cows milking and 33 year old student Leanne Green from County Down uses her hairdressing skills to clip the cattle! Leanne met Katie Acheson at Greenmount two years ago, and the final year students have become best friends. In October, the pair head off on a shopping spree to the autumn Stirling Bull Sales where Leanne is hoping to buy the Pedigree Shorthorn heifer of her dreams.
